The prediction that the end of the world will occur on December 21, 2012, comes from the fact that the calendar of the Mayans, an ancient civilisation, ends on December 21, 2012. To some, this is evidence that the end is near. Of course, the film 2012 also helped to put this ‘‘end of the world’’ idea into people’s mind. The good news is that the Mayan calendar will just start again, just as our calendar starts again on January 1 each year. The date December 21, in the 2012 Mayan calendar, marks the end of the Mayan “Long Count” calendar. It is the end of a 5,126-year era. To make it to the end of a cycle would have been a huge celebration for the ancient civilization. It is a long calendar, but just what does the fact that it is ending really mean? People have predicted everything from the end of the world to the awakening of a new consciousness.

What do you think will happen at the end of the Mayan calendar next year? One thing that is certain is that during the 2012 winter solstice, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in more than 26,000 years. Still, did the world end 26,000 years ago? Why would it end next year?
The truth is everyone will probably wake up the very next day just like you did on January 1, 2000 after the supposed Y2K disaster would have hit. Most likely the only thing that date will mean is the literal end of the long count Mayan calendar.


The New Age interpretation of this prophecy is that, during this time, Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical and/or spiritual transformation, whereas others suggest that the date really marks the end of the world. In fact, December 2012 is the end of a 5,125 year long cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar. Similarly as the ancient Mayan cosmology, the Hindu scriptures view history as cyclical, with vast repeating series of ages; and the Puranas describe a number of cycles within cycles. Dr. Ganapati Sthapati of Chennai, a foremost expert on Vastu Shastra, the ancient Hindu architecture, has found many similarities between the design and construction methods of the Mayans and that of the ancient Hindus.

WHAT DO THE VEDIC TEACHINGS TELL US?

Recent studies suggest a link between Indus Valley and Mayans of Central America. The studies focused on the calendars of the two advanced civilizations. The Indus Valley inhabitants followed a calender based on the movements of Jupiter, and the Mayans followed one based on the Venus. In the Puranas, a secondary Hindu scripture, Jupiter, Brihaspati, was acknowledged to be the leader of the gods, while Venus, Shukra, was the leader of the asuras. The texts further state that the devas and asuras lived on opposite sides of the Earth. Mexico and India are at opposite sides in longitude. The correspondences were pointed out by B. G. Siddarth, director of the B. M. Birla Science Centre in Hyderabad. He also said the Hindu story of the churning of the ocean has been found in carvings in Mexico, as well Mayan representations of a tortoise carrying twelve pillars, similar to Indian illustrations.
